Q: I’ve written a song to one of your beats, how do I release it legally? How much does it cost?
A: Great! You’ve written a song that you want to distribute on Apple Music, Spotify, etc. You can purchase a lease (a contract that allows you to distribute) from my website: https://2frosh.com
The prices range from $40 – $250
Q: What lease is best for me? I’m so hopelessly confused as to which to purchase?
A:
What lease you should purchase depends on a few things.
For example, if you intend for your song to be mixed and mastered properly by an engineer, you might consider the stems license option (allowing you full control over the mixing). But if you only want to use the beat in an advert or mixtape, or you have less finances for the lease, you may consider an MP3 or WAV license, which don’t come with stems.
Next are the rights of each contract, which differ on each lease level. In basic terms, the higher-tier leases allow you many more streams before having to renew a license. I recommend the stems license because you won’t have to renew the license for as long as it lasts.
-
$40 MP3 lease – gets you an .mp3 file and unlimited streaming cap
-
$90 WAV lease – gets you a .wav file and unlimited streaming cap
-
$250 Stems lease – gets you all the above + stems for proper mixing & mastering, with no limits on streams
Q: Can I upload my song to streaming services if I purchase a lease?
A: Yes, with a lease you can upload to any streaming service (Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, YouTube, etc).
Q: Can I upgrade my lease at a later date? (and pay the price difference)
A: Yes, contact me at info@2frosh.com
Q: When do I get my files after I purchase?
A: Files are immediately made available on your receipt screen after purchasing. They are also emailed to the email used while purchasing. If you accidentally close your receipt screen, just check your email for the download links.
Q: Do you use any uncleared samples and should I have to worry about legalities?
A: No, I don’t sell licenses for beats with uncleared samples.
Q: Do your beats come untagged if I purchase a lease?
A: Yes, all my beats come untagged with any license purchase—only a tag at the beginning.
If there is an error, please contact me.
Q: What does “Free for Non-Profit use” mean? If I put it only on SoundCloud, do I need to buy a lease?
A: It means any song you are not able to profit from or monetise can be used free, e.g., social media posts, private demos, or non-monetised SoundCloud posts.
If you put the song on streaming services through DistroKid or any distributor where you could profit (even if you don’t), such as Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, etc., you must purchase the relevant lease.
Q: How much are your exclusives?
A: I rarely sell exclusives and avoid doing so. Prices range from $2000 – $15,000 USD.
Q: If a beat has changed to [SOLD] from [FREE], can I still use it?
A: If a beat has changed to [SOLD], that means I sold it exclusively and I cannot sell the beat anymore. I also cannot share the contact of the exclusive buyer.
Q: Can others use the same beat if I purchase a lease?
A: Yes, other people can still purchase the beat if you only own a lease. This will likely not affect you in any way—the chance of hearing someone else use the same beat is slim. Obviously beats with more views will have a higher chance of this, but it’s still rare.
Q: What happens if someone purchases exclusive rights after I buy a lease?
A: Nothing—your lease is still valid because you will be grandfathered in.
However, if you make a song and have not purchased a lease, and someone buys the exclusive rights, you will not be able to upload your song.
Q: What does “No Content-ID for YouTube allowed” mean?
A: Content-ID is a copyright service for YouTube that claims any video containing audio from a song or beat already in the Content-ID system. This creates a problem when multiple people use the same beat. It can require me to take your song down from all services because it’s a breach of contract.
Q: What happens if I receive a claim on my video and I purchased a lease?
A: If you own a lease and receive a claim, you can dispute it and provide the license document that came with your purchase. The claim will then be removed.
Q: Can we just split 50/50 instead of doing a lease?
A: No, I cannot rely on an unknown 50% split to run my business. If you cannot afford the lease yet, you can always upload your song to SoundCloud and YouTube for non-profit until you have the funds.
Q: Can we negotiate lease prices?
A: Yes, there is an option to negotiate lease prices directly from the pricing of each lease. You can make a reasonable offer there or message me beforehand. If I accept your offer, you will still have to go back and purchase the beat; it won’t happen automatically.
Q: What are the terms of your contracts?
A: If you go to my homepage (click 2frosh on the top-left) and scroll down to licensing info, you can read an overview of each license, and if you click “Read License,” you can go over the contract in full.
Q: Can you edit a beat for me?
A: I generally don’t, but you can contact me in case you are buying a stems license.
Q: Do you make custom beats?
A: Yes, reach out to me via email: info@2frosh.com
Q: Can we collaborate?
A: If you’re a producer or artist, I’m always open to collaborations, feel free to send me an email or DM on Instagram.
